Germany Schengen travel from the UAE: what changed at the border

Germany’s missions in the United Arab Emirates state that the Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026. EES digitally records entries and exits for eligible short-stay travellers at the external borders of the Schengen area.

This is a border-control change. It does not change Germany’s visa or residence requirements, and it does not replace the visa application process for travellers who need a Schengen visa.

What travellers may be asked to do

• Present their travel document at the external border.
• Provide biometric data, including fingerprints and a facial image, where EES applies.
• Allow time for the border-control process, particularly on an initial EES-recorded entry.

Before travelling from the UAE

• Check whether your nationality requires a Schengen visa for your intended short stay.
• If you need a visa, apply under the correct category and follow the official Germany checklist for your travel purpose.
• Keep your passport, visa where required, and supporting travel documents available for border inspection.

Important distinction

EES applies to short-stay border procedures. A valid visa, where required, does not itself guarantee entry: border authorities may still assess whether entry conditions are met.
