Schengen Entry/Exit System: what changed

The Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It digitally records entries and exits for eligible travellers making short stays in the Schengen area, including Germany.

EES is a border-control procedure. It does not change the visa or residence requirements that apply to a traveller.

What visitors may experience at the border

  • Border officers may collect travel-document details, fingerprints and a facial image on entry.
  • Entries and exits are recorded digitally rather than through manual passport stamps.
  • Some airports provide self-service systems intended to speed up the border process.

Whether a visa is required depends on nationality and the purpose and length of travel. For a short visit where Germany is the main destination, check the Germany visa documentation guide from the UAE and verify the final requirements with the German Mission or its authorised visa-application provider before applying.

Before travelling
